I’m intrigued. What led you to Buddhism?

At 16 I began Vipassana meditation out of curiosity about our potential for connection and clarity, which led to studying Buddhism with the first Tibetan Lamas resident in Australia. I kept studying for 30 years, taking classes each week with my teacher and participating in annual retreats. Today, I’m a director of the Tibetan Buddhist Society and a meditation teacher. My practice is deeply woven into all parts of my life, but I still feel like a beginner!

And how did you connect sales to ideas from Buddhism?

When I joined Microsoft early in my career, I was still figuring out how to sell. There were things I’d learned as a practising Buddhist that helped immensely—how to pay attention, listen and take a mindful, calmer approach. I also realised putting the relationship first helped me respond to the situation better. Customers felt I genuinely wanted to help. I always say, “The more you pay attention, the more you hear.”

Where did your career go after Microsoft?

Leading relationships with some of Australia’s largest corporates for Microsoft resulted in many of the biggest enterprise deals in the country. After that, I took my uncommon approach to pioneering EV start-up Better Place. There I helped shape the go-to-market strategy, story and relationships to enable the vision. More recently, I joined Amazon WebServices, leading enterprise and executive enablement across Asia Pacific and Japan. I work with founders and teams to develop the clarity, creativity and emotional discipline selling demands. Those roles taught me what truly drives progress and what gets in the way.

Ok, you've mentioned attention a few times; why does that help?

Attention is simply essential. Most people are constantly distracted. When their attention is scattered, awareness shrinks, and they react rather than respond, with emotions, stress and habits driving decisions rather than calm and clarity. The Harvard Business Review calls the distracted mind an unhappy mind. So, training attention helps people stay steady, present, and emotionally balanced. Building the capacity to pause and notice what’s happening creates space for wiser choices and more emotionally intelligent relationships. Becoming a leader people want to follow or a salesperson people want to buy from.

Why coaching?
Why coaching?
Because ideas alone don’t make lasting change. You’ve got to practise them. Coaching lets me tailor the work to each person and support them to apply the methods. While attention is a foundation, what I coach is broader—a blend of practical frameworks, mindset shifts and proven approaches for both mind-training and business development. At Amazon I saw the limits of training alone. Coaching closes that gap. It helps people turn insight into capability and capability into consistent performance.

How do you view coaching versus mentoring?
How do you view coaching versus mentoring?
They are distinct and complementary, and I use both. To me, coaching is a guided conversation that helps people arrive at their own insights. Unlocking what they hold within themselves. Coaches ask questions to deepen awareness, reveal patterns, and create the space for new thinking and wise action to emerge. Mentors share their experience in a specific area. Providing people with frameworks, examples, and practical guidance to speed their development.
